Independence Day in the United States is celebrated on July 4. It's an interesting choice of dates. On the 4th, the members of the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. However, two days earlier on the 2nd of July, the delegates to the Continental Congress officially voted to approve the resolutioion for independence that Thomas Jefferson penned with a committee. And, it is disputed by historians whether the document was signed on the fourth or a month later on August 2, 1776. John Adams predicted that July 2 would be a "memorable epoch in American history" complete with pomp, parades, bonfires, celebrations and bells. He was only two days off. My guess is it never occurred to him that the day would also include barbeques, fireworks, family reunions, baseball games and political speeches.
